ESXi 5.5 Installation stuck at “Relocating modules and starting up the kernel…”

My upgrade from ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.5 stuck again (see the post Error26002. Setup failed to register vCenter Server). This time it was the host installation. It stuck after loading all the modules at the message “Relocating modules and starting up the kernel…”

After some search in the internet I found this post, that gave me the solution (see a reminder below). However, the ignoreHeadless setting reminded me that I saw something similar before. In a few seconds of thinking and one restart I found it

HeadlessMode

This is BIOS ACPI Configuration! Changing it to Disabled resolved the issue without any additional ESX configuration

Just a reminder how to fix it within ESX:

  • Restart the server
  • Press Shift+O during startup of an ESXi 5.5 installation.
  • Append the boot option

ignoreHeadless=TRUE

  • Press the Enter key to continue boot.
  • Once installation is completed, set the VMkernel boot-time parameter in persistent configuration using the command

esxcfg-advcfg -k TRUE ignoreHeadless
