STORAGE BAD on WD DX4000

One of our WD DX4000 died with a message “STARTUP FAILED 0xD9“. The recovery process from recovery DVD failed with the message “STORAGE BAD“. Even though there was no indication about failed drive(s), I could not  get further than “STORAGE BAD“.

Finally I fixed it. The problem was in a drive partitioning.

Please be aware that this method is destructive and will delete all information from all drives

Partitioning

Remove drives one by one from DX4000 and test them in Disk Management using the portable USB enclosure. Every drive should have unallocated space with the size of drive, like a new drive. If it does not, remove all volumes and all partitions from it. One volume is hidden and cannot be deleted from Disk Management. In this case use DISKPART and run these commands

      LIST DISK
      SELECT DISK <your disk number>
      LIST PARTITION
      SELECT PARTITION 2
      DELETE PARTITION OVERRIDE
      SELECT PARTITION 1
      DELETE PARTITION OVERRIDE
      QUIT

Be careful selecting the drive and partition, this is irreversible. Disk Management should show that the drive contains unallocated space only

WD Recovery DVD

Mount the WD Recovery DVD and run Setup.exe

Select Recreated my storage and follow the process. It takes less than 30 minutes

Run Setup.exe again and select Perform a recovery. It works this time. Simply follow the process and you’ll get your WD DX4000 back online.
