Renaming the Windows Server Essentials

I needed to rename a Windows 2008 Storage server Essentials installed on the WD DX4000. Unfortunately, the Change… button was greyed out

Capture

The root cause of the issue is in the Certificate services, that are needed to encrypt/decrypt the file system content. With CA on-board the server cannot be renamed. However, in this case the server is a member of a domain that has its own CA server, so I do not care of the Certificate services here.

OK, let’s change it

Now, the procedure goes like this:

  1. Open Regedit
  2. Export the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CertSvc key to a file
  3. Delete the CertSvc key
  4. Restart the server
  5. Rename the server; now it is possible
  6. You now can import the content of the file you created before and restart the server again, but in my case I did not do it.
